Algeria: Expert/Consultant for KAP Study on WASH in Schools in Saharawi Refugee Camps in Algeria

Main Function: Implementation of a Knowledge Attitude and Practices (KAP) study on WASH in Schools in Saharawi Refugee camps in Algeria

A. Background Information. CISP implements the project “Improve the learning environment for children in Smara and Layoune camps” in coordination with education actors in the Saharawi refugee camps under UNICEF funding between January 2019 and August 2019 . The Project is focused on the following areas: • Promote hygiene behavior and good hygiene practices for children enrolled, teachers and administrative staff in primary and intermediate schools targeting more than 13500 beneficiaries • Rehabilitation of 3 primary schools in Smara camp including WASH facilities for girls and boys • Reconstruction of intermediate school in Layoune camp following new standards for WASH facilities adapted to Saharawi Refugee camps
• Rehabilitation of 2 kindergartens in Layoune camp including WASH facilities

B. Purpose of the Study. This study aims to fairly measure status of knowledge, attitude, and practice of teachers, children and educational managers regarding WASH. Especially towards adopting improved hygiene principles in the project schools in line with project objectives. In particular, following areas will need further exploration: • Existing trends of hygiene behavior; including hand washing, use of latrine and menstrual hygiene • Conditions of water and sanitation facilities and usage in targeted Schools • A degree of capacities of relevant stakeholders including local education department and Parents association • Level of considerations, concerns and potentials of relevant stakeholders to cope with WASH issues and challenge.

C. Study expected outputs • Existing situation of knowledge, attitude and practices by school populations regarding WASH • Details of opportunities and risks involved in WASH infrastructure development and behavior change activities • Recommendations to cover risks and utilize opportunities for project success. Lead ideas for developing behavior change strategy and relevant indicators adapted to the local context.

Execution times:

Start: 22 September 2019

Duration of field mission: 30 days

Requisites of Consultant

a) 5-7 years experience of conducting similar researches/studies, and data analysis and collection

b) extensive knowledge of WASH approaches, methodologies and best practices

c) Work Experience in similar context of refugee camps will be appreciated

d) Excellent communication capabilities and ability in reports’ writing

e) Good command of written and spoken Arabic and English languages.

f) Knowledge of French an asset.
